sein and haben
sein and haben are the two verbs you need first. sein says who or what someone is. haben says what someone has.
What you will practice
- Conjugate sein and haben in the present.
- Use sein for identity, origin, and age.
- Use haben for possession.
Explanation
The forms
sein changes more than a regular verb: ich bin, du bist, er ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie sind. The formal Sie sind uses the same form as “they.” haben is steadier: ich habe, du hast, er hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie haben. Again, formal Sie haben matches “they.”
When to use sein
Use sein for a name, a job, a characteristic, and where someone is from: Ich bin Leyla, Ich bin Lehrerin, Das ist gut, Ich bin aus Berlin. Age also uses sein: Ich bin zwanzig Jahre alt. A job title usually has no article here. Ich bin Lehrerin is the ordinary sentence, not Ich bin eine Lehrerin.
| Subject | sein | haben |
|---|---|---|
| ich | bin | habe |
| du | bist | hast |
| er / sie / es | ist | hat |
| wir | sind | haben |
| ihr | seid | habt |
| sie / Sie | sind | haben |
When to use haben
Use haben for what someone possesses: Ich habe einen Bruder, Sie hat ein Fahrrad. Do not switch the verbs. Age is not possession in German, so Ich habe zwanzig Jahre is the wrong pattern. The sentence with sein is the one to learn.
Examples
- Ich bin Lehrerin.I am a teacher.
- Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt.She is twenty years old.
- Ich habe einen Bruder.I have a brother.
- Wir sind aus Berlin. We are from Berlin.
- Haben Sie ein Fahrrad?Do you have a bicycle? (formal)
Common mistakes
- Ihr seid addresses more than one person as du. It is not the formal form.
- Formal Sie and “they” share sind and haben. The capital letter and the context show which one you mean.
