Going on foot and by vehicle
Russian chooses the motion verb twice. First, on foot or by vehicle. Second, one trip in one direction, or movement that repeats. The destination uses the accusative.
What you will practice
- Use идти for one trip on foot and ходить for a habit.
- Use ехать for one trip by vehicle and ездить for a habit.
- Use в школу for a destination, not в школе.
Explanation
On foot
One trip on foot, happening now or aimed one way, uses идти. Я иду в школу means I am going to school. A habit uses ходить: Я хожу в школу каждый день. Я иду каждый день puts the one-direction verb on a repeated schedule. This lesson has no prefixes. пойти and прийти are a different topic.
By vehicle
A vehicle uses a different pair. One trip is ехать: Я еду на работу. A habit is ездить: Я езжу на работу каждый день. Do not use иду for a bus or a car. Do not use еду for a walk. The я form of the habit verb is езжу, with жж.
Destination
The place you are going toward is accusative, not prepositional. в школу is the destination. в школе means you are already there. Я иду в школу and Я в школе are not the same sentence. Work as a destination is на работу. Work as a location is на работе, from the previous lesson. Motion picks the destination form.
