French is official in France, Belgium (with Dutch and German), Switzerland (with German, Italian, and Romansh), Luxembourg, Monaco, and Canada at federal level — and the everyday language of Quebec. It is also a working language of the UN and the EU. In West and Central Africa it is the language of school and the capital even where most people speak something else at home: Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and others in the Francophonie. Haiti uses French in official life next to Haitian Creole. Maghreb countries still teach it widely; Arabic is the national language.

Paris is not the only French. Montreal and Dakar will not sound like the lesson audio. That is normal. The written language still holds.
