Onde se usa

Spanish is official in Spain and in most of Latin America — Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Cuba, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Paraguay, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Uruguay, plus Equatorial Guinea in Africa. Puerto Rico uses it with English. Mexico has more speakers than Spain. In the US, Spanish is not official at federal level but it is the second language of daily life in large parts of the southwest, Florida, and New York. Catalan, Basque, and Galician are co-official in parts of Spain; Barcelona is not Spanish-only.

  • SpainOfficial. Also Catalan, Basque, and Galician in their regions.
  • MexicoOfficial. The largest Spanish-speaking country by population.
  • ColombiaOfficial. Bogotá Spanish is often used in Latin American media.
  • ArgentinaOfficial. Rioplatense Spanish uses vos, not tú, in everyday speech.
  • Peru & ChileOfficial. Andean and coastal Spanish differ; both are Spanish.
  • Cuba & Dominican RepublicOfficial. Caribbean Spanish drops some consonants; still the same language.
  • United StatesNot federal official. Everyday language in large parts of California, Texas, Florida, New York.
  • Equatorial GuineaOfficial with French and Portuguese. The one African state where Spanish is a national language.

Para que serve

Travel

One language covers most of a continent. Brazil is the main exception. In Spain you will also meet Catalan on signs in Barcelona and the Balearics.

Work

US employers in healthcare, retail, and logistics often want Spanish. Latin American trade and remote work go through it too.

Everyday life

Film, music, and football commentary from Madrid to Buenos Aires. You do not need a second Romance language to follow most of it.

Cidades onde de facto o vai usar

Spain and Latin America do not sound the same. Visit at least one of each if you can. The words overlap; the rhythm does not.

  • Madrid

    Spain

Castilian Spanish, the vosotros forms textbooks love. A clear place to hear the app's variety in the street.

  • Barcelona

    Spain

Catalan is co-official and on most signs. Spanish still works; it is not the only language in the room.

  • Seville

    Spain

Andalusian Spanish swallows some sounds. Useful after Madrid if the textbook felt too neat.

  • Mexico City

    Mexico

Faster than classroom Spanish. Nobody uses vosotros. Street food and metro announcements will do more than another list.

  • Buenos Aires

    Argentina

Vos and a distinctive ll/y. Tango tourism is real; so is office Spanish that does not sound like Spain.

  • Lima

    Peru

Coastal Spanish, with Quechua and Aymara in the Andes behind it. A different mix than Mexico or Argentina.

  • Bogotá

    Colombia

Often held up as a relatively clear Latin American standard. Altitude, rain, and a lot of office Spanish.

  • Havana

    Cuba

Caribbean Spanish. Consonants disappear at the ends of words. Still Spanish; your ear needs time.

Que variedade a app lê

Audio is es-ES (Spain). Latin America uses ustedes where Spain uses vosotros, and Argentina's vos will not match the lesson. People still understand Spain Spanish. This page does not pretend the app is a DELE course or a Latin American track.
